North Oxford Garage, one of the biggest BMW dealerships in England, has opted for cabling solutions from Datwyler when building new commercial premises and workshop facilities. For EMV sensitive areas, especially in workshops, a shielded solution (STP) was employed.
Recently North Oxford Garage moved to a large site in the north of the Oxford, where they put up new showrooms for new and used BMW motor cars and motorbikes, workshops, a parts department, offices, a canteen for staff and a coffee shop for customers. At a separate site in Long Hanborough a showroom and workshop facilities for the MINI were built.
When equipping the premises with a new cabling infrastructure, North Oxford Garage decided in favour of a high-performance class E solution for all voice and data services for both locations. Category 6 cables and components were chosen to eliminate electromagnetic interferences and to be able to support all current and future applications.
The unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling in offices and showrooms uses a Datwyler Keystone solution. For EMV sensitive areas, especially in workshops, a shielded solution (STP) from Datwyler`s portfolio was employed.
The planning as well as the installation of the cabling infrastructure was conducted by SMC (UK) Ltd., a Witney based systems integrator. “The nature of the site, with its mixture of offices, showrooms and workshop facilities brought up some specific problems, for example the risk of electromagnetic interference (EMC) on cables running through the workshop areas”, explains Adrian Dix, Business Manager at SMC. “Installing a class E network was felt to be the best solution as it supports all current applications and is also highly future-proof.”
SMC contacted Datwyler as previous experiences had shown that this company was able to offer exactly the range of solutions and technical support required. The installation was completed within the agreed time scale. SMC installed 282 unshielded (Keystone) and 51 shielded ports altogether. The relatively high number of ports was felt to be necessary to offer high flexibility to the users as required.
Tests conducted after installation have shown, that all ports fulfil category 6 performance requirements. “We are delighted with the quality and performance of the Datwyler products, that have been installed, but, more importantly, we are also very pleased with the level of service and support, that we have received from Datwyler throughout the course of this project,” Adrian Dix summarises SMC`s experiences. ”We will not hesitate to use Datwyler products on future projects.”
